When you are about to have a baby you are bombarded with information from bounty packs, magazines, books, friends and family. You rush out and buy all the equipment everyone says you need, prams and buggies, moses baskets, changing matts, changing bags, cots, muslins and quite often this including piles of baby clothes. Once you are expecting a baby it’s hard to think of anything else and you find that you have a whole new reason for shopping, browsing and looking for bargins.
Baby clothes are a very personal choice, you know what you like and what you don’t like. You may not know whether you are having a boy or a girl and even if you do, you may not want to go down the pink or blue route. When you actually have the baby, I have found that clothing tends to be the most popular gift that people buy and of course people buy gifts which reflect their own taste, not necessarily yours!
Friends and family can’t wait to run out and buy a cute little outfit for the newborn, whether it’s a baby outfit or accessories like a woolly hat and glove set or bootees.
Depending on the season, the variety of baby clothes are vast and varied. It doesn’t stop there either, there are so many colours and fabrics, spots and stripes. Often people do buy pink for girls and blue for boys, but it can be quite overwhelming, lots of people prefer a more varied range of colours like reds, oranges and yellows for girls and greens and browns for boys.
I found that when I came home from hospital I had a baby clothes mountain, there were so many, my baby hardly got any use out of many of them because he had grown out of them before he had a chance to wear them. I had all the clothes I had bought and all the clothes that had been given as gifts from friends and family and there were just too many. When you are shopping for baby products before you actually have you baby, it is worth remembering that baby clothes for the first year only last for around 3 months, so most parents find that there are clothes the baby hasn’t even worn and that they have grown out of. Of course if you have a particularly sicky baby you may get a lot of use, because they need changing regularly.
It worth remembering not to go too mad on clothes, you can always buy more after the baby is born, if needed.
